CURRICULAR SHEET

Alberto Mendiola was born in Oaxaca in 1984. Between 2001 and 2006 he studied at The University of Texas at El Paso in the United States where he obtained a degree in creative writing and art. He lived in El Paso, Texas for 10 years where he continued his artistic training and exhibited collectively and individually in different galleries. He obtained a scholarship in 2011 to reside in Madrid, Spain where he continued to work on his pictorial, literary and photographic work, seeking to experimentally integrate the different elements and languages. In 2013 he returns to Oaxaca, where he joins Taller Tamayo and exhibits in 2014 collectively. He then continues to participate in different workshops in the city and at the San Agustín Center for the Arts. In 2015 he opens his own workshop and continues to paint consistently in the city of Oaxaca.

His work fluctuates between an expressionist search for materials and an investigation of advertising and the mechanisms that maintain these power relations through consumption, desire and identity. Influenced by pop art, abstract expressionism, neo-expressionism and Oaxacan culture, an aesthetic concern that seeks the experimental is seen. Which is perceived when seeing the different layers and dimensions of paint that saturate the painting. Where they are rediscovered, they vanish, they are rescued by scraping, they adhere to dry paint, they are glued as collage and paint is poured. Painting is a reunion with the primary, with the desire for permanence, but with the awareness of impermanence, the incorporation of the ephemeral with the infinite.
