ARTE AHORA OAXACA, or Art Now Oaxaca, is a visual project conceived to deliniate some of the multiplicity of influences Oaxaca art has undergone in the past 20 years. Newcomer visual artists that have integrated their lives, ways of thinking, and influences to the art world in Oaxaca are key to the new designation of “Oaxaca Art” today. These artists, considered immigrants from the “Ninth Region”, an invented term coined from the known “Eight Regions of Oaxaca,” are now permanently permeating the styles, themes, materiality, and creative-thinking of the artists of these Eight Regions.

As syncretic influences, these ninth-regioneers reprocess the traditional imagery, styles and materiality common to the art of Oaxaca to develop new ways of dialogue through visual means. As an example, the exhibition features the intimate visual discourse of Kat Wong, a thirty-year Oaxaca resident, who embodies Caribbean spirituality with pop culture in her multi-layer imagery, or Samuel Rojas, an artist formed in Mexico City and past director of the school of papermaking under Francisco Toledo, who incorporates his fibrous paper creations and natural dye usage techniques with synthetic applications into his informalist abstract paintings of grand scale. The result is a visual reminder of how the concept of Oaxaca art is continuously redefining itself.

Represented in this exhibition are: Virgilio Santaella, Siegrid Wiese, Esteban Urbieta, Samuel Rojas, Kat Wong, John Kaine, Edgar Jahir Trujillo, Alberto Mendiola, Jesus Gonzalez, and Ana Kuri.

ARTE AHORA OAXACA es un proyecto visual concebido para delinear algo de la multiplicidad de influencias que ha tenido el arte oaxaqueño en los últimos 20 años. Los artistas visuales recién llegados que han integrado sus vidas, formas de pensar e influencias al mundo del arte en Oaxaca son clave para la nueva denominación del “arte de Oaxaca” de hoy. Estos artistas, considerados inmigrantes de la “Novena Región”, término inventado acuñado a partir de las conocidas “Ocho Regiones de Oaxaca”, ahora permean permanentemente los estilos, temas, materialidad y pensamiento creativo de los artistas de estas Ocho Regiones.

Como influencias sincréticas, estos noveno-regionales reprocesan la imaginería tradicional, los estilos y la materialidad comunes en el arte de Oaxaca para desarrollar nuevas formas de diálogo a través de sus propios medios visuales. Como ejemplo, la exposición presenta el discurso visual íntimo de Kat Wong, una residente de Oaxaca de treinta años, que encarna la espiritualidad caribeña con la cultura pop en su imaginería de múltiples capas, o Samuel Rojas, un artista formado en la Ciudad de México y ex director de la escuela de fabricación de papel de Francisco Toledo, quien incorpora sus creaciones de papel fibroso y técnicas de uso de tintes naturales con aplicaciones sintéticas en sus pinturas abstractas informalistas de gran escala. El resultado es un recordatorio visual de cómo el concepto de arte oaxaqueño se redefine continuamente.
